Large Antique Pair Of Jean Gille Bisque Figures Of A Male Officer With Female

DESCRIPTION : Here is a large pair of mid 19th century Jean Gille bisque porcelain figures. They are very well modelled and highly decorated. The male officer is half seated on a table and is holding a glass of wine aloft in his left hand.

He is wearing a two tone blue coat and has a red and gilt epaulette on each shoulder. His top is painted in pink, mauve and gilt decoration.

His pantaloons are painted in a three tone blue, pink stripe work, raised gilding and applied small white dots and is wearing mauve and gilt coloured shoes. Part of the table is covered with a pale yellow cloth with darker yellow dots and drapes down to the floor.

The table top is in a two tone blue and white relief dots and has a bottle of wine laying down on the top. The stem of the table and the scrolled feet have gilt decoration.

The female companion has a pink bow and pink ribbons in her hair with pink roses with green leaves to one side of her hair. She has a gilt coloured pearl necklace, a pink rose with green leaves and stem to the front of her dress near the top and has another bow to the back of her top and is holding a pink rose with green leaves to her chin.

The female figure is wearing a two tone blue top and has small applied white dots and pink line work. The blue top has a pale yellow trim at the top and bottom and cuffs with darker yellow dot pattern. Is painted in a two tone pink, gray/blue leaves, dark blue and gilt. They are both on the same shape and decorated bases. The top part of the bases are painted in a faux marble with impressed scrolling pattern.

The larger part of the base is faceted and is painted with a blue and gilt pattern. The do not have the applied blue pad mark but both have an incised pattern number 451 the female figure is not quite as easy to see but is there but are known jean Gille models. Date to circa 1860's. SIZE : The male officer measures 15 inches high and his female companion measures 14 3/4 inches high. The combined weight before packing is 7.3 kilos = 10kg parcel.

CONDITION : The male officer with the left hand aloft has had the hand broken off and re glued (by myself and super glue was not used). The same hand has the thumb and finger missing. The base of the wine glass shows at the bottom of the hand but the bowl is missing at the top as in picture 12.

The handle of his sword inside his coat is chipped off at the top as in picture 8. The top edge of the table would of had a gathered lace going around it but most of it is missing with just a small piece remaining next to the yellow cloth as in picture 9. On the faux marble base there are some dark marks which i believe there once was his Helmet.

The female companion has the small finger missing to her right hand holding her dress. The right hand holding the pink rose has had her thumb re glued and the green leaves to the rose has chips to the leaves. The roses and leaves in her hair may have tiny chippings but hard to tell. The left shoulder to the back a previous owner has written a collection number which I have not tried to remove. Both figures have a firing crack to the underside of the bases.

Despite the damages they are still a good looking pair.
